Baby-led feeding workshops

In recent years baby-led feeding has become commonplace and babies and parents have enjoyed sharing the same family foods as well as supporting developing skills such as hand eye coordination, fine motor skills and growing independence.

Baby-led Weaning was originally researched and promoted by Gill Rapley, who was able to demonstrate that babies are developmentally ready to feed themselves a variety of finger foods from around 6 months.

Gill’s findings are in line with Public Health England and the World Health Organisation, who recommend babies start solid foods at around 6 months. No special equipment is needed and because baby can eat the same foods as the rest of the family from the start, time and money is saved.

During the workshop we will look a little at the history of introducing solid foods and why it is developmentally important for babies to start trying foods at around 6 months.

We will also discuss:

  • food choices and how to prepare them

  • continuing to breast or bottle feed at the same time as giving solid foods

  • gagging and choking, which many parents worry about

  • how to combine baby-led feeding with spoon feeding.

The 2 hour workshop can be delivered in your home to you and a group of your friends for a total of £60, enabling you to share the cost between you. It is most relevant for families with babies around 5 months old.
