Covid-19 update:

During the current coronavirus pandemic the way I conduct consultations and home visits has changed to reduce risks as much as possible.

Please see the guidelines here.

I qualified in Chester as a registered general nurse in 1985 and worked in several roles including practice nurse at a military family centre, elderly care, end of life nursing and adult medical and surgical wards. In 2002 I joined Medway Health Visiting Service where I found a passion for supporting families and young babies.

My interest in providing breastfeeding support intensified following Baby Friendly Initiative training, and in 2005 I started running a weekly breastfeeding support group as well as seeing mums and babies on a one-to-one basis.

I started developing and delivering breastfeeding training for health visitors in 2007, and in 2009 became the infant feeding lead, continuing to train health professionals and children’s centre staff, and lead the health visiting service through the Baby Friendly Initiative accreditation process.

After accruing over 1000 hours of one-to-one breastfeeding support and attending more than 75 hours of lactation specific training I passed the 2010 International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiner’s exam and proudly became a lactation consultant, recertifying in 2015.

In 2010 I established a weekly specialist breastfeeding clinic with a midwifery colleague to support complex breastfeeding challenges, and as part of the process began to recognise the impact of tongue-tie on infant feeding. In 2016 the clinic was enhanced to provide specialist support for babies facing bottle feeding difficulties, many also affected by tongue-tie.

I gained a First Class BSc honours degree as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (health visitor) in 2015 whilst continuing to run the specialist clinic and training health professionals and peer supporters.

In June 2016 I developed Medway Community Tongue-tie Service, integrated with the breastfeeding and bottle feeding clinics to provide ‘one stop’ specialist services for complex feeding challenges. I was trained in tongue-tie division by Vicky Jordan RGN IBCLC and consolidated as a tongue-tie practitioner at Southampton in April 2017 with Jayne Threfall RM IBCLC. I have also attended workshops delivered by renowned tongue-tie specialists Catherine Watson Genna (2014), Alison Hazelbaker (2016) and Sarah Oakley (2018), and delivered a presentation at the Association of Tongue-tie Practitioners Conference on developing a community tongue-tie service (2017). I have also completed the Level 4 Understanding Tongue-tie in Infants course (2019).

In May 2018 I left Medway and moved to Suffolk, working as an Independent Lactation Consultant and Tongue-tie Practitioner until 2021. Since then I have been predominantly training health professionals, and providing support at home for feeding challenges.

I have two grown up sons and live near Framlingham with my partner; in my spare time I enjoy walking, birdwatching, meeting with friends and baking for the village community café.

I make monthly donations to UNICEF, Guide Dogs – Sponsor a Puppy, Demelza Children’s Hospice, the RSPB and the Woodland Trust.
